Sofia's gentle and understanding nature may align her decently with signs like Pisces or Taurus but her strongest attributes are her intellect, her independence and her optimism. She also fits the role of the traveler that defines Sagittarius. Some of her passive attributes align well with the centaur's open-mindedness and generosity. As she says herself, she makes a pretty good teacher which is a role that often characterizes Sagittarius. Meanwhile her impulsiveness can pass for impatience and irresponsibility, some of their more negative traits.

"I had to sit for a messer Albrect Durer for a full week. Can you imagine? Me sitting still for seven days? Doing nothing? ...Una Tortura" Sequence 5, Memory 4

Driven by a love of literature and learning, and a passion to spread knowledge throughout the world, Sofia is a woman who sets her own rules in life and never waits idly to realize her ambitions. She is described in the game as polylingual, multicultural and an intelligent woman mature beyond her years. Growing up in Istanbul to Venetian parents certainly gave her a unique perspective on the world, one split between the east and the west and she is well acquainted with the ways of both worlds. Yet, instead of being critical of their differences she embraces them and in her own way she seeks to reconcile these differences in the world through her work, primarily the spread of knowledge. She goes to to great lengths to realize this, demonstrating that she is both willing and motivated to do whatever it takes. Though taken away from Istanbul because of the Ottoman-Venetian war, her ambition drove her back only a few years after the it had ended. Living and travelling alone, she is also rather independent for the times and quite willing to get her hands dirty on occasion.

Clearly, her life is devoted to this work. At 36 years old, she shows no interest in settling down nor is there any indication of a serious relationship prior to Ezio, though the game hints that she was not lacking in suitors. The painter, Durer, claimed he could take no money, that it would be an honor to paint her upon seeing her and she also attracts the attention of other men throughout the course of the game. Yet, Sofia is perfectly content, elated even to live among her books and studies. It is when she is not hard at work that she grows restless. Although, if someone were to share in her interests she is equally happy to allow them into her world.

This dedication is where her intelligence comes from. She’s a learned woman with a passion for all forms of knowledge. She is well versed in history, literature, the arts and sciences, and she speaks a number of languages which broadens the amount of material that is open to her. Even the master assassin who has seen much in his life, has quite a bit to learn from her. She assumes the role of solving codices for him, something previously undertaken by Leonardo da Vinci, and she makes it seem easy. In fact she delights in the work, often finishing it quickly, glad to help out -- sometimes using it to her advantage -- on what she perceives as an adventure.

Her intelligence and wealth of experience is definitely a source of her maturity but instead of aging her she actually comes across as quite youthful. Her eyes practically light up like a kid at Christmas when lays eyes on a number of different maps and lost texts that Ezio finds on his journey. She lets her mind run away with itself as she quickly imagines all the possibilities for each new discovery, making all kinds of plans for them at a moments notice, only drawing back to consider the downsides as an afterthought. But she never lets them hold her back. This enthusiasm can get her in trouble too and is undoubtedly what landed her in the hands of the Ahmed. The work she was doing in the game was dangerous but she was a bit blinded by the prospect of having access to so much important information so she never questioned Ezio's motives too deeply. Often, she either takes what he says at face value or simply accepts it without prying. When she questions Ezio about who he is, she looks like she doesn't fully believe his answer, so she's doesn't miss these points. Rather, she chooses to ignore them. Since she is so independent and a bit of a risk taker, even if she were aware of the potential dangers that wouldn't necessarily dissuade her.

As it was said, Sofia's primary interest appears to be knowledge but when Ezio comes into her life, as they search together for the Maysaf keys, we see that she isn’t always completely wrapped up in her work. She’s obviously skeptical when Ezio first introduces himself as “the most interesting man in her life” It’s enough to make anyone roll their eyes but when he begins to prove himself, she starts to open up to show a warm, caring side. She may not admit to the change of heart openly but Sofia isn’t very good at hiding her feelings either, making her very approachable and friendly. As such, she provides something of a respite for Ezio without even intending to.

Because she cares about him, we also see the extent of her open mindedness. When she finally learns that Ezio is an assassin, Sofia isn’t at all disturbed nor does she turn him away. Instead she questions him about his life and about the creed. She’s curious about someone who could choose to live their life like that and she’d rather judge them by who they are as a person. Fortunately Ezio does a lot to prove himself throughout the course of the game. She also provides him with a sympathetic ear, doing so both for him and her own interest. She notices when someone has a story to tell and she’s always willing to listen especially if she knows it will help. In Embers, when a Chinese assassin visits them in Italy, Ezio doesn’t want anything to do with her but Sofia convinces him to let her stay a while because she’s had a long, difficult journey and she would also like to learn about about her too.

This doesn’t mean she’s completely selfless though. As a woman on her own she still has to take care of herself, so she knows how to get what she wants all on her own. Sofia even possesses a bit of manipulative streak which she turns against Ezio later on, emphasizing both intelligence and ambition. She understands what’s going on between them better than he does and she skillfully turns the right phrases and acts in such a way to trick him into a having a picnic with her, knowing he was far too wrapped up in his own business to agree to it outright. She even gets flowers from him in the process. She’s someone that’s very self aware and she’s able to read others and uses both these facts to her advantage.

Near the end of the game, Sofia proves just how tough she can be. After Ahmed has kidnapped her and tried to kill her, she does not break down. She is understandably confused and disoriented, but she keeps calm and listens to Ezio, helping him right through to the end. When she’s not getting worked up over her work she keeps a pretty level head. The same is true when Selim threatens Ezio to rile him up. Sofia is the one to hold him back and reassure him, remind him that it is not his fight.

Finally, Sofia is, overall, a pretty positive, energetic person. She views the time she spent with Ezio as an adventure in spite of the difficulty and danger. She always seems to have a kind word on hand, when someone needs it most. Though unquestionably dedicated to her work, she is still inviting and optimistic around most other people. Sometimes, we see a softer side of Sofia or even a somber one but it takes a lot to really get her down.

"Zodion" First-Person Network Entry:
[There’s some rustling and clicking but it takes a while before anyone speaks.]

What a curious thing...

[She goes silent again, for another minute or so, before the feed suddenly switches to video and focuses on an older, auburn haired woman.]

Goodness! Is it working now?

[And then she’s back to fidgeting, examining the device every which way. The screen flickers a few more times but all she can discern is the obvious; it’s for communication. How it works... well... with no way to be certain, she sighs.] Guess it’s worth a try.

[Sitting up straight, she smiles.] Buongiorno. My name is Sofia Sartor. I arrived here on a ship bound for Venezia. We stopped to resupply, you see, and I can’t seem to find my way back to the harbor.

I suppose if what the letter says is true, then it is no longer here. [She looks rather pensive. The letter wasn’t at all specific, neither was it difficult to understand. Belief is another matter entirely but considering everything that’s happened...]

Assuming it is true, I have so many questions! Who are these twelve and what do they want with us? They weren’t very clear. Is this really a different world? I’ve heard of such things before but it was pure fantasy. Where I come from does not look so different either. What other worlds are out there? Is there a way to visit them as well? I would love to bring this information back home with me. It just changes everything!

[She stops suddenly.] Mi scusi. This is all just so new and exciting.... [Pausing, she’s not quite ready to end. It’s easy for her to get wrapped up in the moment but there’s something else, weighing on her mind.]

Just one more question. I was travelling with mio fidanzato. I wonder if he might be here as well.

"Zodionlogs" Third-Person Prose Entry: (200 word min)
After days at sea, she just wanted to stretch her legs. Her wanderlust had been well tempered in the last few months but life at sea was an abrupt change. Too abrupt.

Ezio felt just the opposite. He had left something behind in the library of Maysaf; a chapter in his life had come to an end so he was content to linger. Though he would not admit it, Sofia knew he was long overdue for a rest.

She reassured her fiance that she would be gone for an hour, two at the most. At the appearance of fine wine from Toscana, he relented and by the time the first glass was poured, she had wended her way out of the tavern. The air outside was crisp and smelled of salt and little more, so unlike the medley of coffee and shisha and spices that permeated Istanbul like a dense fog. It was an assault on the senses and she would miss it but this too would be exciting.

The town was small and before long she came upon the forest stretching out before her. She planned to simply skirt the edges, knowing if she lost her way she would lose her ride to Venezia as well. However, she hadn’t expected to find a path. And such a well kept one at that. How could she pass it up?

Judging by how well it had been trodden, she suspected that the villagers used it to collect food or supplies but there was plenty to see as well. At every step it seemed there was something new, a different tree, a new animal skittering through the underbrush, some she had never seen before though none of it seemed particularly out of place. Commit this to memory, she told herself. There would be ample opportunity to learn more about them back home. Then, she happened upon something quite remarkable.

“Oh...” Sofia let out a gasp, soft and barely audible.

The path led to a clearing and there in the middle was a stone structure, beautifully preserved, Greek in style yet unlike anything she had ever seen. Was this the reason for the path? That didn’t see like a very practical answer and yet something about the site seemed to allay her doubts. It wasn’t just curiosity that drew her towards it. She felt compelled.

After passing through the arches, she found a simple altar. Strange, that the water around it still flowed, undoubtedly from some natural source. Yet, what was really strange happened only after she crossed over it.

She didn’t notice, not at first. She was distracted by the pain resonating from her chest and what she found there. A mark, though she couldn’t quite make it out. Not until she looked up again. What in the world was this place!

Where the water once laid, stood a barrier with a mirror like surface. Though she looked every which way, her reflection was still the same. Nude. And there, nestled between her breasts at the source of the pain was the mark of the archer. Her patron. How could this be happening? For a moment she suspected it was a dream and she was still on the ship. But there was a clarity to this place that left her questioning it. Such things were indeed possible. Ezio had assured her of that.

It was then that she noticed the box on the altar. Inside was a letter that was perhaps the most alarming thing thus far.

Another world? What did that mean? She could hardly believe it. No. She had dealt with worse. She just had to stay calm and make her way back to the town. This was clearly no place to linger.

Now if she could just find that path.
